The TubeBuddy chrome extension is super helpful when it comes to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). It is specifically helpful when it comes to optimisation within YouTube.

Optimisation is important as it increases high-quality traffic to your video. In other words, you will reach a more targeted audience and they will be more likely to interact with your video. This increases Click Through Rate (CTR) and watch time for your video which improves the rank of the video within the YouTube search engine.

Higher-ranking videos add to your channel’s reputation and position within YouTube. The more high-quality visitors you get to your video, the more successful your video will be, which will add to how successful your YouTube channel is.

TubeBuddy helps increase the ranking of your YouTube video by giving you the tools you need to optimise it to the best it can be.

Find top preforming keywords using TubeBuddy in YouTube

You can use two methods with TubeBuddy to help you find top preforming keywords in YouTube.

1. Using Keyword Explorer

To get to Keyword explorer:

Step 1: Go to YouTube and select the TubeBuddy icon in the top right corner.

Step 2: Select Keyword Explorer.

You can now use the search bar to search up your keywords.

As you type your keyword, TubeBuddy will drop down a list of suggested keyword variations. These keywords are likely to be high ranking.

Step 3: Once you’ve typed the keyword, click Explore.

Clicking explore

The keyword explorer will show you the overall score for the searched keywords.

You will see a weighted and unweighted score. The weighted score is based on your YouTube channels current ranking, how much the keyword is relevant to your channel, the search volume of the keyword and the number of videos competing for the same keyword.

The unweighted score doesn’t consider your YouTube channel or content. The score is based on the search volume and competition for the keyword.

You will also receive a score analysis of the keyword. It includes:

  • Search volume on YouTube
  • Competition (weighted)
  • Optimisation strength – SEO score for the top-ranking videos on YouTube. If they are not well optimised, this gives you a better chance to rank if you optimise your video properly.
  • Number of videos in search results on YouTube. The more videos on YouTube, the harder it will be to rank for due to higher competition.

2. Finding keywords using search explorer

Search Explorer is a TubeBuddy add on that pops up in the search results of YouTube. When you search for a keyword, it shows results for its keyword Score, Keyword Stats, Related Searches and Common Video Tags.

Step 1: Search for your keyword in the YouTube search bar.

This will bring up the search explorer results for the keyword.

TubeBuddy helps your Videos rank in YouTube

1. Use Videolytics to analyse competitor videos

Another helpful tool that TubeBuddy provides is Videolytics. Videolytics is an SEO analyser that appears next to all YouTube videos when you have the TubeBuddy extension. This extension shows information on the video. Such as:

  • Summary which includes total video views, video comments, and likes
  • SEO score which includes creator suggested, ranked tags, and SEO score
  • Social which includes Facebook likes, Reddit upvotes, Twitter mentions.
  • Channel views, subscribers, and videos
  • Best practices with a list of SEO steps to help the video rank
  • Tags used on the video with the ranking scores

This information allows you to get a clear idea of how to optimise your own video. Using this in conjunction with the keyword explorer puts you in a better position to rank higher on YouTube.

2. Use the SEO Studio tool to analyse your videos SEO score

SEO studio is a tool within the TubeBuddy extension. You can enter your videos information to receive an SEO score. This will help you optimise your video to the best it can be.

Step 1: Select the TubeBuddy icon in the top right corner. Click on SEO Studio.

Step 2: Enter the keyword into the search bar and click start.

Entering keywords into TubeBuddy

This will take you to the SEO studio. You can then add your video description and any extra keywords you may want to include in your video title. The tool will analyse the keywords for both areas and give you an SEO score out of 100.

Step 3:  Select relevant tags for your keyword

Using the tag tool, select relevant keywords for your YouTube video. TubeBuddy will suggest top ranking tags to include on your video.

Step 4: View competitor thumbnails

Using the thumbnail tool, you can analyse the top performing videos for the keyword and see what their thumbnails look like. TubeBuddy suggests using bright, high contrast images that are close to the subject. Include clear fonts and shapes that are easy for watchers to see.

Upload the thumbnail for TubeBuddy to analyse.

Once you are happy with your SEO score you can click next to apply these changes to the video.

Optimising your thumbnail using A/B testing on TubeBuddy

Another way TubeBuddy helps optimise your videos on YouTube is A/B testing on the thumbnails. TubeBuddys A/B thumbnail testing for thumbnails takes two or more variations of a thumbnail you have created for YouTube and does a randomised experimentation process. The process involves showing both thumbnails to different users on YouTube to see which one generates more interest such as click throughs and watch time.

Creating an A/B test is a simple process on TubeBuddy when you have your YouTube account linked.

To create an A/B test:

Step 1: Go to your TubeBuddy account dashboard.

Step 2: Select A/B tests.

Step 3: Go to Create AB Test.

Step 4: Select the YouTube video you would like to do an A/B test on. You can do this by selecting a recent upload or searching for the video.

Step 5: You can select whether you want to run a Thumbnail CTR test or a Metadata test.

Note: A Thumbnail CTR test focuses on click through rate and lets you know what percentage of people click on your video when its displayed on YouTube. This test does not affect the ranking or discoverability of the video.

A Metadata test can change the Thumbnail, Title, Tags and/or Description all in one test. This test involves the video to temporarily drop out of search results due to YouTube reindexing the video every time the Title, Description or tags are changed. A Metadata test is not recommended for high preforming videos as it can be detrimental to them. A Thumbnail CTR test does not cause this to happen.

Another limitation of the Metadata test is that it's hard to determine which changes actually affected the results as there are multiple aspects being tested.

Creating AB test

Follow the steps below on Creating a Thumbnail CTR test and Creating a Metadata test.

Creating a Thumbnail CTR test

Step 1: Click on the Select in the Thumbnail CTR Test option.

Clicking the thumbnail CTR test

Step 2: Either enter the number of days you want your test to run or select Run until Click-Through Rate is “Statistically Significant”.

Note: The Statistically Significant test stops when one of the versions of the tests has at least a 95% chance of outperforming the other in the long run (based on click through rate and impressions).

Step 3: Select continue.

Step 4: Upload a Test thumbnail.
