Working from home can have so many benefits and it often requires us to create our own schedule and manage ourselves.

Because of this, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges that working from home can bring such as it being harder to switch off due to your home also being your workspace.

In this blog, I will cover 5 wellness tips for working from home. Implementing these tips into your work routine will help achieve a healthy work life balance while working from home.

  2. Stay healthy while working from home by using a standing desk
  3. Maintain your health while working from home by investing in an ergonomic workspace
  4. Use a water bottle at home to keep hydrated and healthy while working from home
  5. Create a daily schedule that alerts you when you need a break to maintain a healthy work life balance

1. Look after your health while working from home by eating your meals away from desk

While working from home, it’s important to separate your work and your mealtimes. If your mind is focused on work, it can be distracted from your meal. Being distracted often leads to overeating so it is important to stay mindful while consuming foods.

The best way to do this is to remove yourself from your work environment. Having a separate area for eating your meals is a great way to stay mindful of how much you are consuming. In addition to this, eating a meal outside allows you to get some fresh air and soak up some Vitamin D.

Another reason why eating meals away from your desk is beneficial is that it allows your brain to have a break. Breaks are important to restore motivation, increase productivity and improve physical and mental health.

Working from home can sometimes feel isolating. Scheduling a lunch date with a friend or a team member is a great way to have social interactions throughout the week.

2. Stay healthy while working from home by using a standing desk

Alternating between sitting and standing while working at your desk has proven to have many health benefits. Sitting down at your desk for long periods of time can cause your muscles to become tight and lead to neck and back pain.

Taking time to stand at your desk throughout the day can help improve posture and therefore improve back and neck pain. Standing also burns more calories than sitting and therefore can lower your risk of weight gain and obesity. (source). It can also help tone your muscles as it uses your muscles more than sitting.

There are also more potential benefits from increased standing at your desk such as it may help lower your blood sugar levels, can increase your energy levels, and improve your mood, reduce the risk of heart disease, and lower the risk of cancer.

Here are our favourite standing desks.

3. Maintain your health while working from home by investing in an ergonomic workspace

When you’re working from home it is important to have an ergonomic workspace. As well as investing in a quality desk, it is beneficial to have a comfortable chair. The Making Living Lovely team all use and love the EOS Spectrum 3 Office chair. We’ve used this chair for years and have noticed the difference a good chair can make.

Another item that can improve your workspace is a footrest. Footrests have many health advantages such as helping increase blood circulation, preventing leg pain and stiffness, blood clots and varicose veins.

If you’re someone who struggles with wrist pain from typing on the computer daily, a mouse and keyboard support could be something to look into. These help to reduce wrist pain by elevating and supporting your wrist.

4. Use a water bottle at home to keep hydrated and healthy while working from home

Staying hydrated has so many benefits such as improving mental performance and cognition. Becoming dehydrated can leave us feeling tired and sluggish. It is usually recommended to drink around 2 litres a day to stay healthy and hydrated.

Sometimes, when we are working, we forget to drink as we are so focused on our work, or we don’t feel like getting up 8 times a day to get a glass of water. This is where water bottles are your best friend.

I personally use a water bottle every day as it’s easily accessible as well as it being great for on-the-go activities. My go to water bottle is the Frank Green Ceramic Reusable Bottle which has the bonus of maintaining your beverages temperature.

Using the 1 Litre bottle means that I can easily track how much I have drunk in a day. Having two of these bottles a day means I am easily meeting my required amount of water intake for the day.

5. Create a daily schedule that alerts you when you need a break to maintain a healthy work life balance

While working, it is important to take regular breaks as they help refresh your brain and improve productivity. Sometimes, working from home can make us forget that we need to remove ourselves from our desk and take these breaks.

One great way to remind yourself to take a break is to set up a daily schedule that alerts you when you need to take a break. If you find yourself not fitting breaks into your daily work schedule, check out our post on 5 reasons why you should use a calendar to create a daily work schedule.

Scheduling time to stretch is another great way to improve your wellness as sitting at a desk all day can cause our muscles to tighten and gain tension. Taking just 10 minutes every couple of hours to stretch your muscles is a great way to negate the effects from sitting at a desk all day. Its also a great way to improve blood flow and brain power.

Sometimes, working from home can be quite sedentary so it is important to get regular exercise in. Scheduling just 30 minutes a day to go for a walk is a great way to stay physically healthy when working from home. Not only that, but it’s also a great way to get outside into nature.

To Sum Up

Staying healthy while working from home is important for your physical and mental health. I hope these 5 wellness tips help you to improve your work life balance.
